Surface and Self
The Face

Surface and Self I,  (Gerhard Richter), 2025
Archival pigment print, 40 × 40 inches

Surface and Self is a sequence of twelve portraits in which the face is subjected to successive transformations until it no longer resolves into a single, stable image.
Each work embeds elements of the artist’s visual language directly into the image, simultaneously constructing and disrupting the face. In this process, authorship becomes visible, and the portrait records not only the presence of the subject, but the conditions of its making.
What emerges is neither fixed likeness nor pure abstraction, but a constructed presence in which surface and identity are inseparable.
